The Clutter Clinic

Here's your chance to ask Sue your questions on decluttering and getting organised. Please email sue@nomoreclutter.co.uk. Sue'll answer as many as she can on this page. She is always interested in hearing your clutter stories and any useful tips you would like to share.

Clare asks: I want to help my partner get organised. I feel depressed living with someone who hoards things and never wants to throw anything out. Is there anything I can do to encourage him to get going?

Sue answers:

I appreciate how hard this is for you. What I would suggest is you stand back a bit and have a look at the things that belong to you. Are you really as decluttered as you want to be? Concentrate on streamlining your stuff so you feel you are in control and relaxed about your clothes, and other things you own. By modelling the behaviour you want to encourage in your partner, you can get them to see what you mean without nagging. Sometimes this breaks the tension between partners.

It is impossible to make someone else declutter. However it is only fair if you live with someone to agree areas in the home that you keep clutter free. Maybe this would be the living room or bedroom. Your partner may be more interested if you decide to have a car boot sale and spend the money on something you both want such as a digital camera or a holiday.

Good luck.
