Play the numbers game

I visited a family home recently where all the kids were nearly grown up, yet the house was still full of plastic toys and endless board games. I suggested that they decluttered some of the games to make more space. The mum's immediate response was what if I have grandkids - I might need them one day. So I suggested she played the numbers game - count all the games she currently has. Say that comes to 20 - then decide to half them down to 10, keeping only the favourites.

You can use this logical way to reduce clutter for lots of different items - from the number of cookbooks you keep, to the number of pairs of jeans or trainers. After that if you use the One-in One-out method then you'll stop clutter creeping back. It's simple yet effective!
